How to Dye Rice
Updated: Mar 5, 2025
Rice is a super fun sensory bin item that is also safe if ingested. You can choose any colors you looks to let your kids imagination soar!
Things You’ll Need:
Rice (I went for the cheapest option from Aldi )
Vinegar
Food safe dye of choice
Flat baking sheet
Wax or parchment paper
We used a ziplock baggie to pour one cup of rice and one tablespoon of vinegar into. Then we added a little bit of dye.
Zip, shake and evaluate.
Add more dye if needed.
Once the desired color is achieved, pour the rice out to dry onto a baking sheet that you lined with wax or parchment paper.

We let ours dry for 2 hours while we played outside. Puppies were our first sensory bin theme and my daughter loved it!
For our lesson I paired this sensory bin with the book “In my Heart a Book of Feelings” by Jo Witek. A dogs love is unconditional so I thought this was a good pair to talk about love and feelings of the heart.
